Hibernate chives
The herb can easily tolerate temperatures as low as minus 25 ° C. To make the plant fit for winter, you should cut it all the way down in autumn and cover it with a thick layer of mulch (€ 213.00 at Amazon *) or sticks. Further maintenance measures are not necessary. The plant will sprout again in spring.
Hibernate the chives in the pot
Pot chives can also easily overwinter outside, for example on the balcony. Cut it down in good time before the first frost and cover the substrate with mulch. Chives kept in the room need a rest phase even in winter, preferably in a bright but cool room.
Tips & Tricks
Chives are hardy and can withstand even the lowest temperatures. However, chives left in frozen ground can quickly die of thirst. Therefore, make sure that you only water your balcony plants on frost-free days.
