Where and how to plant begonias correctly?
Do you want to plant begonias? A partially shaded or shady location without direct midday sun is best. Begonias are shade plants whose leaves and flowers burn in direct sunlight! In the morning and evening, however, the plants enjoy sunlight. The optimal begonia location is partially shaded, airy and without midday sun. The soil should be rich in nutrients and very well drained. To do this, mix a third to half of the sand into the potting soil.
If you plant begonias in window boxes (€ 106.25 at Amazon *), you should fill in a drainage made of expanded clay (€ 17.50 at Amazon *) or gravel. Hanging and tuberous begonias are suitable for balcony boxes. Both types of begonia come in countless varieties of flower and foliage colors. In spring and autumn it is sufficient to water once or twice a week.
Because of the fleshy leaves and shoots, begonia plants are sensitive to mechanical influences. Strong wind, hail or rain damage leaves, shoots and flowers. It is advisable to plant begonias in appropriately protected areas and to attach or provide additional support for long shoots.
Does less apply to begonia care?
As easy to care for as begonias are on the one hand, they are thirsty on the other. Begonias die of thirst quickly without an additional water ration, especially on hot summer days. Therefore pour enough. But absolutely avoid waterlogging! This is much more harmful to begonias than brief periods of drought. Check the water balance of indoor begonias daily. Do you want to give your begonia a special treat? Then pour it with lukewarm water and give it a shower from a spray bottle.
Besides love, air and water, begonias regularly need nutrients. Long-term fertilizers or weekly fertilizers have proven useful. Because the lush flowers need strength. Storage fertilizers such as blue grain are also suitable in low doses. The rule here is: less is more. If you regularly remove dead flowers and damaged leaves, the plant will flower longer and become more robust. You can stop fertilizing from late autumn.
Begonias come from tropical regions. That is why they are only allowed outside in spring when there is no longer any threat of frost. In autumn they should overwinter early in frost-free rooms. They are sensitive to sub-zero temperatures and die.
