Planting time for keeping pots

Basically, you can plant canna in a tub all year round. However, it is advisable to plant the plant or its tubers in spring and place them outside on the balcony or terrace, for example. As long as there is still frost at night, Canna has to be quartered again in the evening. This tropical plant, which needs light, is less suitable as a houseplant.

Which location and which soil do cannas need in the tub?

Cannas are considered to be warmth-loving and like to seek direct sun. Therefore, a full sun to sunny location should be selected for the canna in the bucket.

On the balcony, a place facing south and protected by the balcony overhang is ideal. If Canna is sheltered from rain, it will flower almost continuously. On the terrace or elsewhere, good locations are in front of house walls or under a roof overhang.

Canna should ideally be placed in a pot made of clay or terracotto. This should have a minimum width of 40 cm. The plant has the following demands on the earth:

  • good drainage
  • lots of nutrients
  • moderate humus content
  • like a mixture of clay, sand and peat
  • moist environment

How should you care for cannas in the tub?

Cannas in the tub don't need much different maintenance than cannas in the garden. Only the frequency of watering and fertilizing increases. To overwinter it is enough to cut the canna before the first frost and put it inside.

Tips & Tricks

When planting a canna tuber in a tub, make sure that the eye of the tuber is facing up. Otherwise the plant will find it difficult to grow.
