Buddleia - location, plants, propagation

Which location does the buddleia prefer?

The buddleia feels most comfortable in a sunny, warm location. The shrub is very tolerant of heat and produces the most beautiful flowers even where other plants are simply too hot. However, if such a location is not available, you can also position Buddleja in the light penumbra.

Which soil is suitable for buddleia?

Buddleia feel most comfortable in a moderately dry, well-drained soil that is enriched with compost or soil when planted. Garden soils with a weakly acidic to alkaline pH value are best suited.

When is the best time to plant the Buddleia?

Young summer lilacs in particular should be planted in spring - preferably after the last night frosts in May. Then the shrub has enough time to acclimate to its new location over the summer months.

Can you also grow Buddleia in a pot?

In general, Buddleia is both fast-growing and vigorous: most varieties grow to be between three and four meters high and often as wide. However, there are also dwarf varieties that can easily be cultivated in a tub, for example the purple-violet blooming Buddleja davidii 'Summer Beauty'.

What is the best way to plant Buddleia?

When planting the buddleia, it is best to do the following:

  • Find a suitable location.
  • Place the root ball in a bucket of water so that it can soak up.
  • Dig a sufficiently large planting hole.
  • This should be twice the size of the root ball.
  • Soil that is too heavy can be mended with sand.
  • Use a large shovel to mix up the excavated material.
  • Plant the buddleia and pound the potting soil firmly.

When planting, make sure that the shrub is just as high or deep as it was in the pot.

Which plant spacing should be kept?

Many varieties can be up to three meters wide, which is why you should always ensure that the planting distance is appropriate. However, because the lower area is often bare, it can be planted very well with other perennials or flowers.

What is the best way to propagate Buddleia?

The varietal propagation takes place via herbaceous cuttings, which you cut in June / July and immediately plant in a pot with seed compost. The cuttings should be about six to eight inches long. Otherwise the shrub tends to self-sow, whereby the results are mostly similar to the wild form.

When does buddleia bloom?

Most varieties bloom between July and September.

Tips

Young specimens in particular are sensitive to frost and need light winter protection. However, they drift through again after minor frost damage.
