Which tools and which knowledge do I need?

A climbing frame shouldn't be your first manual job. It makes sense if you are familiar with the use of tools and precise measurement and careful work. A cordless screwdriver can be found in almost every toolbox, as well as sandpaper and a jigsaw. (€ 71.15 at Amazon *) As an experienced craftsman, you probably already have a folding rule, a 90 degree metal angle and screw clamps.

However, since you have a lot of wood to work with and saw thick posts, it may be advisable to buy a miter saw and / or a belt sander. You will also need a sledge hammer to hammer in the ground sleeves.

Where can I get building instructions and materials?

The Internet is a real treasure trove for building instructions of all kinds. Make sure, however, that the instructions come from a competent craftsman. Do-it-yourself and gardening magazines occasionally also contain building instructions for playground equipment, possibly also available for download on their website.

You can get the material for your new climbing frame either from a well-stocked hardware store or from a timber dealer. The posts may even be available in the required length at the hardware store, but unfortunately mostly not at wood dealers.

You may ask the timber dealer whether the staff will cut the posts to the required length for you. With a little luck, you won't even have to pay anything for it. You also save the cost of a miter saw if you don't already have one.

Do I have to set the climbing frame in concrete?

A climbing frame has to be well fixed but not necessarily set in concrete. The greater the load and the larger the climbing frame, the more important it is to have solid anchoring. It is particularly recommended that several children can exercise or play on the scaffolding at the same time.

Step by step to the self-made climbing frame:

  • Realistically assess your own craftsmanship
  • Select the corresponding assembly instructions
  • Get material
  • Rent or buy any tools you may need
  • work carefully and, above all, measure
  • anchor firmly!

Tips

Make sure that the climbing frame is well anchored so that the scaffolding is stable and nothing can happen even when it is heavily used.
