Dandelions - most dangerous after the flowering period

Flowering period: April to June and after

The main flowering of the dandelion begins around the beginning of April. The individual flowers are present for several days - close at night, rain and drought - before they bloom. The flowering period lasts until the end of June / beginning of July. Often there is a re-bloom in late summer.

Individual flowers can then appear until autumn. The perfect harvest time for dandelions (flowers e.g. for salads, syrup) has come both before and during the flowering period.

This is what the flowers look like!

Here are the characteristics of dandelion flowers that will help you identify them:

  • one flower per plant
  • 3 to 5 cm wide
  • Flower heads above the stem
  • plate-shaped inflorescence
  • 200 to 300 ray-flowers per flower head
  • Ray-florets stand on the flower base
  • are composed of 5 petals, a stylus and 5 anthers
  • green bracts

Warning: After that, the seeds will spread!

When in bloom, the dandelion is less of a threat. But after the flowering period it means: be careful! As soon as you touch the seed heads only lightly, the seeds fly away and ensure that they multiply. If you have a garden and want to remove the dandelions, you should do so before or during flowering!

Tips

The early onset of flowering and the high content of nectar and pollen make the dandelion flowers particularly valuable for the bee world and consequently for beekeepers.
