How to plant Allium giganteum - tips and tricks

The ideal location and the right soil

Allium giganteum, the giant onion, needs a sunny spot for beautiful flowers. The soil is preferably dry to slightly moist and moderately rich in nutrients. If it is not permeable, create a drainage made of gravel or sand. If it feels good, the giant leek will spread all by itself in your garden.

The perfect planting hole

Ideally, you plant ornamental onions three times as deep as the onion is high. With the giant onion, this corresponds to a planting depth of around 20 centimeters. The distance between the individual plants should be about 30 centimeters. However, dig the planting hole a few centimeters deeper.

A layer of sand or gravel about five centimeters high ensures the necessary permeability of the soil. Also, put some compost in before putting the onion in. So your giant onion has enough nutrients for it to grow and the first bloom.

The ideal planting time for the giant onion

The autumn from September to the first frost is considered a suitable planting time. The earlier you plant your giant onion, the sooner it will sprout in spring. Planted early, your leeks will have enough time to grow and develop strong roots by winter.

Can giant onions be combined with other plants?

Giant onion can be perfectly combined with a wide variety of plants. It goes well with a romantic country house garden, with roses and ornamental grasses. Low ground cover conceals the yellowing leaves of the leek in summer. Herbs such as lavender or oregano are also good neighbors for giant onions.

The essentials in brief:

  • Location: ideally very sunny
  • Soil: well-drained, without waterlogging
  • Planting time: autumn, September until the start of frost
  • Plant spacing: 30 cm
  • Planting depth: 20 cm
  • Drainage: approx. 5 cm of sand in the planting hole
  • Fertilizer: compost

Tips

Giant onion can be combined well with other plants. This is an excellent way of concealing the leaves, which are already yellowing in summer.
