The dragon tree gets yellow leaves - what to do?

Under certain conditions there is no need to panic

Newcomers among the dragon tree gardeners should first of all be aware that the thin trunk of the dragon trees, similar to some palm species, gradually elongates as the leaves of the crown die off. Occasionally yellowing and later falling leaves are quite normal if they are the bottom leaves and green leaves remain in sufficient numbers at the top of the plants. In this case, you do not need to take any special measures and can simply pluck or cut off the completely yellow, dead leaves.

Care errors as a reason for yellow leaves

If an excessive number of leaves yellow on a dragon tree at the same time, this can indicate care errors. In these cases, the yellowing begins earlier from the top of the plant and yellow spots can sometimes appear on the leaves. This could be due to the following reasons:

  • Waterlogging at the roots of the dragon tree
  • Iron deficiency or an oversupply of fluorine through unsuitable fertilizers
  • Temperature fluctuations due to direct sunlight, drafts or dry heating air
  • Root injuries from repotting

In many cases, too frequent watering causes the leaves to turn yellow.

Yellow leaves as a sign of disease

Yellow leaves on the dragon tree are not always due to incorrect care. Sometimes a disease such as soft rot (Erwinia carotovora) can be the reason for this. Signs of this would be a fishy odor and mushy stem ends. Sometimes offshoots of infected plants can still be rooted successfully, but because of the outbreak of disease that usually follows on the offshoots, infected specimens should be disposed of immediately.

Tips

In rare cases, yellow leaves appear, even when there is not enough water, as a sign that the plants are drying up. If the soil in the pot is very compact, it can make sense to water the plants once a week using the immersion method.
