Choosing the right seeds
There are different ways to get the seeds you need to grow watermelons. Of the many different varieties of watermelon, the specialist trade for gardening supplies usually offers those that are most strongly represented as imported goods in supermarkets. These are usually the large-fruited Crimson Sweet and the smaller Sugar Baby. You can also use seeds from purchased or home-grown watermelons to grow the plants. However, you must then make sure that on the one hand it is not a hybrid variety and on the other hand that you also remove any pulp from the seeds. If the pulp remains on the seeds, they can mold very easily during the germination phase.

Bring the plants forward in good time
During the high season from May to September, imported watermelons in the supermarket mostly come from the following southern European countries, where the heavy Crimson Sweet variety is then ripe:
- Spain
- Hungary
- Italy
- Turkey
Otherwise, watermelons such as the smaller Sugar Baby variety are imported all year round from countries such as Iran, Mexico and China. So that you can harvest fully ripe fruits from a watermelon in our climatic latitudes, you have to bring the plants forward in good time. Sow your watermelons in pots from around mid-April so that you can plant the young plants outdoors in frost-free weather in May or in a greenhouse.
The perfect location for a watermelon
Even if you don't have a spacious greenhouse for your watermelons, you can still harvest them well in a warm place in the garden. Make sure, however, that the soil is well drained and rich in nutrients and that the young plants are well protected from slugs.
Tips & Tricks
Watermelons thrive particularly well on a slope facing the sun. This can also be generated by filling up a small pile of earth, which at the same time provides a remedy against waterlogging.
