When is the best time to expose oleanders?

The colder the oleander hibernates, the sooner it can be cleared

Oleander should overwinter as cool as possible at temperatures around five degrees Celsius. Plants that are brought over the cold season at these temperatures can also be left in a darker place and moved outside earlier than warmer wintered oleanders. Oleanders that have been overwintered in cool conditions can - depending on the weather - be put out between the beginning and the middle of April - but initially only for an hour. You should also protect the pots from the cold overnight with bubble wrap or similar. Specimens that have overwintered at temperatures above ten degrees Celsius, on the other hand, should only be outside from around the beginning to mid-May. These oleanders have often already formed new shoots that are very sensitive to cold.

Oleander slowly get used to the sun

When clearing out the winter quarters, you should also not put the oleanders in their usual place in full sun. The plant is no longer used to their effects and could get sunburned. It is also possible that she responds to the sudden shock by shedding the leaves. Instead, place the oleander in a shady spot, as close as possible to a warm house wall, and slowly increase the solar time from day to day. If cold spells are to be expected, it is best to clear the plant again or wrap it warm to protect it from frost. Otherwise they can be damaged by the frost (e.g. dried up leaves and shoots).

Overcast or rainy days are ideal for clearing out

In order to protect the oleander from the harmful effects of the sun (keyword: UV light), it is best to take it out of the winter quarters on a day with a cloudy sky or on a rainy day. This gives the plant more time to get used to the new location and the changeover shock is not too massive.

Tips

The rule of thumb for overwintering oleanders always applies: move the plants into their winter quarters as late as possible and clear them out again as early as possible.
