It's not just the high levels of oxalic acid in the leaves that one should look out for. The milky juice in the stems is also not exactly harmless. The latex contains a substance called taraxacin. When ingested in large quantities, it can have the following effects:

  • Liver pain
  • diarrhea
  • stomach pain
  • Nausea
  • rheumatic complaints
  • Cardiac arrhythmias

Externally, there may be irritation

The white milky sap contained in the stems can also cause symptoms when the plant is picked. Sensitive people then often suffer from skin irritation. Itching and eczema can occur. However, this should not be a reason to completely remove the dandelions from the garden now.

Contains lots of beneficial nutrients

Since dandelion contains lots of vitamin C, carotene and minerals such as iron and potassium, it should not be removed from the menu once you have got to know it and like it. Only the stalks with the milky juice should be cut off and disposed of. The bitter substances are harmless and even beneficial in small quantities.

Tips

In small amounts, dandelions are absolutely not harmful! You can confidently eat a few leaves and several flowers every day without feeling any negative after-effects.
