Only cut flowers that are half open. Fully open flowers only last a very short time in the vase.

How do you prepare the sunflowers for the vase?

Cut the bottom of the sunflower stems two to three inches so they can store enough oxygen.

Dip the ends in boiling water for a maximum of five seconds. Under no circumstances should you leave the stems in the water for longer.

The stems are desolated by heating. This prevents the flower from rotting too early.

How can the cut flowers be kept fresh for a long time?

Put the cut sunflowers in a vase with lukewarm, never cold water.

  • No blazing sun
  • No drafts
  • Change water daily
  • Prune every two days

As cut flowers, sunflowers do not tolerate full sun. Therefore, put the vase in a place that is bright but not too sunny. Protect the bouquet from drafts.

What should you watch out for when changing water and cutting?

Make sure that the flower water is never completely cold. Warm water, however, does no harm.

Use a clean, sharp knife to cut it so that you do not transfer germs and the stems do not fray at the bottom. Frayed areas provide a good breeding ground for bacteria.

Does Blumenfrisch help to keep sunflowers longer?

Flower fresh is not necessary if you change the flower water daily. It just prevents putrefactive bacteria from multiplying in the water so that the vase doesn't smell unpleasant. This has no effect on the shelf life of the flowers.

Tips & Tricks

Sunflowers are not houseplants. Even in pots, they only stay indoors for a short time. Once the flowering period is over, you can only add the plant to the compost.
