Herbs in the palette - the smart upcycling bed

Why the Euro pallet is suitable as a herb plant

The Euro pallet is currently very popular with upcycling enthusiasts - alternative cafés serve their guests on completely self-made pallet furniture, living pioneers live in self-constructed, original pallet buildings. The reason why the Euro pallet is so popular may be due to its robust, stable slat construction, the raised or recessed block supports and its practical format. With its large, but still handy dimensions and its straight edges, it can be used in new ways in almost all directions.

are literally ideal “framework conditions” for a herb bed. Why?

The first point goes without saying. A herb bed system, especially if it is to be mobile, must be stable. In addition, the herb bed should bring you joy and that certain something into your soup for more than one season.

On the second point: The recesses created by the block supports on the underside of the Euro pallet are ideal for the small-scale space requirements of the kitchen refiners that grow as perennials or dwarf shrubs.

The format of 1.20 m in length, 80 cm in width and 14.4 cm in height is ideal for a small herb plant culture.

The diverse installation options offer a lot of creativity in the realization of your pallet herb bed.

In the following, we present two ideas with instructions on how to fill the Euro pallet with aromatic green. We start with the variability of the Euro pallet and suggest a vertical and a horizontal variant.

manual

Vertical - the herb pallet rack

With this variant, the Euro pallet comes to a stop on one longitudinal edge and the plant containers for the herbs are created between the block supports on the underside.

To do this, nail a pallet-length board each on the outside and in the middle of the three pairs of blocks, parallel to the top battens. In order to get floors in as well, close the six resulting gaps according to the installation side on their undersides with another, suitably long board.

So you have created two, in total, six elongated plant boxes at the top, in the middle and at the bottom. You should line these with mulch film so that the wood does not rot. Then you can fill them with soil suitable for the herb varieties and plant them.

The whole herb pallet rack should be firmly fixed to a wall.

Horizontal - the mobile herb pallet bed

Actually, you can proceed in exactly the same way, only in a horizontal orientation, for a portable herb pallet bed. Here you close the top side of the batten completely and the outside with boards. Inside, you connect the block supports with upright boards, so that a cross with 4 rectangular plant boxes is created.

These each form a mini bed for two or three types of herbs with similar soil preferences.
