However, the procedure in spring could damage your flowers and in summer the soil could dry out too quickly and watering has to be done every two days if there is no rain. Therefore, preference should be given to autumn.

Where is the best location?

Before planting in the ground, the location should be chosen appropriately. In principle, the hazelnut should not be planted directly next to less competitive plants. It grows extremely large and also takes up a lot of space due to its runners. So plan enough space!

The best location is in a partially shaded to sunny location. In addition, the plant is in a wind and frost-protected location (to keep its flowers from freezing in February).

How is the hazelnut planted?

Planting the hazelnut should be carefully considered. Once planted, it is difficult to remove. If you have decided to do this, pay attention to the following points:

  • Loosen the soil beforehand
  • Substrate: rich in nutrients, permeable, slightly acidic to alkaline, moist
  • for faster growth: Dip the roots in liquid fertilizer beforehand

When you have placed the plant in a generously dug planting hole and covered it with plenty of soil, you can cover it with a layer of mulch. This prevents the soil from drying out too quickly. Vigorous pouring and a water supply in the first few weeks should definitely be given.

Tips & Tricks

If you want to harvest hazelnuts in late summer, you should plant at least two bushes. The reason: the hazelnut is not self-fruiting.
