Gundermann, the creeping ivy

Gundelrebe is also called creeping ivy because the leaves look very similar to those of the climbing plant. They are much smaller, however. Gundermann climbs up on a plant in very shady locations. In contrast, ivy climbs many meters up walls and trees.

Ivy has very inconspicuous, yellowish-white flowers. Gundermann stands out for its blue-purple lip flowers, which appear from March to June.

This is how you distinguish Gundermann from Günsel and Kleiner Braunelle

Creeping Günsel is most often confused with Gundermann. However, it is much smaller and also has more delicate flowers. Furthermore, Gundermann's main flowering period falls in March and April and then weakens. Günsel blooms from April to May.

The Kleine Braunelle does not begin to bloom until June and continues to produce new flowers until October. The inflorescences differ in that they stand upright and form small cobs.

Even experienced gardeners can often only distinguish the plants without flowers if they are placed next to each other.

Differences to the red dead nettle

The flowers of the red dead nettle are similar in shape and color to those of Gundermann. They are smaller at the top, but wider at the bottom. The clearest difference between red dead nettle and Gundermann is the upright growth of the nettle, while the Gundelrebe is a creeper.

Tips

Gundermann can become a real nuisance in the garden, as it spreads almost unhindered. Combating them is very time-consuming and requires a lot of manual labor and great patience.
