Propagate Clusia

Propagate Clusia

Clusia propagate instructions

Usually you propagate a balsam apple using cuttings. How to proceed:

  • Cut off 15 to 20 cm long, healthy shoots from the mother plant.
  • Place the scissors on or below a blade axis.
  • Let the interface dry briefly.
  • Prepare a growing pot and lightly moisten the substrate.
  • You must also keep the substrate moist in the following weeks.
  • However, waterlogging should be avoided.
  • Only water when the top layer of soil has dried.
  • If the shoots are strong enough, you can isolate them and transplant them into separate pots.

Alternative method

Did you know that you can grow the cuttings without any substrate? Hydroponics is a useful way of multiplying the balsam apple, especially for allergy sufferers. To do this, put the young shoots in a glass of water. Change the water regularly and keep it in a bright place. You should only avoid direct sunlight. The great thing about this method is that you can closely observe the root growth. Small water roots will soon form, signaling that you can soon transplant your Clusia into the ground.

Do this very carefully so as not to damage the tender roots.

Accelerate germination

Regardless of the method you choose, it is advisable to put a transparent plastic film over the growing pot or the glass vase. In this way you increase the humidity and cause a greenhouse effect. This simple construction is comparable to a mini greenhouse (6.96 € on Amazon *) that offers your balsam apple an optimal environment for rapid growth.

By ventilating the film once a day, you will avoid mold growth.
