Furthermore, due to the prevailing climatic conditions in Germany, not every type of magnolia is suitable for planting in the garden; it would simply freeze to death in winter. When choosing the varieties in question, however, make sure to choose a small magnolia, because most can reach impressive dimensions of four to five meters and more. For many hybrids, stature heights of around three meters are also given, but this can be doubted. No values can yet be given for numerous new varieties because there are simply no fully grown trees. Remember that even a small magnolia needs a lot of space in the pot due to its broad, bushy growth.

What speaks against keeping a bucket?
Many a pot magnolia thrives excellently in the first few years, only to degrade slowly and gradually afterwards. This is due to the fleshy, thick and heavily branched roots, which feel too tight and too warm in the pot. Magnolias like to have cool “feet”, which, however, cannot be achieved in the bucket, especially in summer. In addition, both the soil compaction is too high and the supply of water too irregular - magnolias need a stable, balanced location in order to feel comfortable. Naturally, there is no such thing in a pot. On the other hand, it can make sense to keep a laboriously grown young magnolia as a container plant for the first one to two years in order to better protect it from cold winters.
Cultivate magnolia in a tub
In contrast to planted magnolias, tub magnolias need a lot of care. A regular water supply must be ensured because the plant should not dry out. However, it does not tolerate waterlogging very well either. Therefore, sufficient drainage in the pot must be ensured. Furthermore, pot magnolias must be fertilized every two weeks with a good liquid fertilizer. About once a year, or every two years depending on the growth, the magnolia needs a larger pot with fresh substrate. Magnolias are unsuitable for keeping as a houseplant.
Tips & Tricks
Pot magnolias are best overwintered under cold house conditions, ie in a frost-free, protected place with a maximum temperature of 10 ° C. If that is not possible, the pot should be packed well, as the soil in the bucket freezes through quickly and the roots need to be protected.
