Harvest delicious lamb's lettuce fresh from your own garden

The harvest is determined by the time of sowing

Because of its tolerance to frost, lamb's lettuce is a salad that usually replaces other types of salad in the winter months. Nevertheless, you can harvest this lettuce almost the whole rest of the year if necessary. The hardy varieties of lamb's lettuce can be sown in late autumn and then harvested in spring a few weeks after the snow has melted. Depending on the variety and season, lamb's lettuce takes around ten to twelve weeks from sowing to the first harvest.

The right seeds for every season

When choosing the seeds, pay attention to the information in the planting instructions. Some varieties are ideal for sowing in spring, others develop optimal growth when sowing in autumn. Still other varieties can survive the winter outdoors or in window boxes (€ 106.25 at Amazon *) and thus ensure a harvest in March and April. The following varieties are all-rounders that deliver relatively consistently good results all year round:

  • Favor
  • Ovired
  • Gala

Don't just harvest lamb's lettuce once

Lamb's lettuce has a specialty that makes it particularly valuable and productive in the vegetable patch. When harvesting the lettuce leaves, be sure to carefully separate only the upper part of the plants with scissors or your fingernail. If you leave the roots and the base of the plant undamaged in the soil, you can assume that the lettuce plant will sprout again. This way, lamb's lettuce can be harvested several times in a row from the same plants without having to be sown again.

Harvest lamb's lettuce from the balcony

You can even harvest lamb's lettuce without having your own garden if you grow it in pots or flower boxes (€ 13.19 at Amazon *) on the balcony. This cultivation variant is particularly interesting for a harvest in spring. So you can grow the lamb's lettuce in autumn from seeds of a hardy variety, when the flowers have already withered, and then let it overwinter in the flower box (€ 13.19 at Amazon *).

Tips & Tricks

Only harvest as much of the lamb's lettuce as you can use fresh. If cut off, this salad will only keep for a maximum of one to two days in the refrigerator.
