Unlike other berries, rowan berries stay on the tree through the winter. Especially in the cold season, they help feed the birds.

Rowanberries are slightly poisonous to humans when raw

Rowan berries contain traces of parasorbic acid, which can cause mild symptoms of poisoning in humans.

Adults tolerate individual raw berries without any problems, only children and animals, except of course birds, should not eat raw rowan berries at all.

If large quantities of rowanberries are eaten raw, the body reacts with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Harvest rowan berries for the kitchen

Rowan berries can be harvested from the tree from August. They have a very tart taste, and some varieties are also very bitter. These are not suitable for use in the kitchen. So take a berry and check with your tongue whether it belongs to the particularly bitter varieties.

One way to mitigate the tart taste is not to harvest the berries before the first frost or to put the picked rowan berries in the freezer for a short time.

The whole umbel is always picked. Before preparing, the berries are carefully rinsed and dried. They can be easily removed from the stems with a fork.

The following can be prepared from mountain ashberries:

  • jam
  • jelly
  • juice
  • Rowanberry brandy
  • tea

Rowan berries can also be dried. The slightly poisonous ingredients evaporate during the drying process.

Dried berries taste quite good as an additive in tea, especially in combination with apple and pear pieces.

If you keep pet birds in the house, you should definitely dry some rowan berries from the garden and give them to your loved ones as additional feed.
