Stinging nettle leaves
It can be recognized by the fact that the leaves of the currant change color and the shoots produce fewer flowers.

It is caused by a virus that is transmitted by the currant mosquito.
Cut off infected parts generously and dispose of them. Spray the plant preventively with tansy tea and do not leave too many shoots when pruning.
American powdery mildew
If a white-gray coating appears on the leaves of the currant, the plant suffers from powdery mildew. This is a fungal attack.
All infected areas are cut off and disposed of. As a preventive measure, you should regularly spray the currants with nettle stock or horsetail broth.
Chemical agents should not be used, as you will then no longer be able to harvest and consume the fruits.
Pillar grate
If rust- to orange-colored pustules appear on the leaves in autumn, the currant suffers from columnar rust.
It is a fungus that overwinters in five-needle pines in the area and spreads from there.
Gather any affected leaves from the bush and soil and throw them in the garbage can. As a preventive measure, all pines within a radius of several hundred meters would have to be felled, as this is the only way to permanently eradicate the fungus.
Leaf fall disease
Leaf fall disease occurs mainly after a very wet spring. This fungal disease only affects white and red currants.
The leaves show brown spots, curl up and eventually fall off.
The leaves must be collected and disposed of in the garbage can.
Red pustular disease
Red pustular disease occurs when the leaves of the currant bush wither and fall off in the early summer. At the same time, red pustules can be seen on the bark of the shoots.
All maintenance measures, all shoots must be cut. Preventive treatments with nettle stock are helpful.
Tips & Tricks
Healthy currant plants are more resistant to disease and pest infestation than sick ones. Provide a good location and an adequate supply of nutrients. Light the plants regularly.
