Cut wild roses - not too much!

Not too much of a good thing - blooms on the old wood

In general: You shouldn't be able to look at a cut of a wild rose. It is therefore advisable not to cut these crops at all or only a little. It is enough to thin them out in summer or spring. If you cut too much in spring, you will remove the flower buds that were already formed the previous year.

The wild roses proliferate - cut back radically

Are your wild roses growing now? Then it's high time you cut them! You can easily prune this plant back radically. They are sprouting powerfully. The best time to do this is in early spring. Such a cut can also be made directly after flowering.

Warning: wild roses like to bald from below!

With increasing age, more and more old shoots arise. At some point they will no longer have any leaves. The result: the wild rose looks bare. Now a strong tapering cut would be appropriate! The plant can be shortened to 50 cm.

How do you prune a wild rose hedge?

Do you maintain a wild rose hedge? Then keep this in mind when cutting:

  • Regular cutting and thinning is important for an opaque hedge
  • However, the result is fewer flowers
  • Time to cut: every spring
  • start at a slight angle when cutting
  • Apply about 5 mm above an outward-facing eye
  • Use rose shears for thin shoots, saw for thick branches

Beware of the thorns!

Do not act completely carelessly! Wild roses have numerous, long, hook-shaped thorns that can injure yourself and damage your clothing. It is best to wear gardening gloves and old clothing when cutting and disposing of the clippings!
