Snake cucumber cultivation in the greenhouse and in the field

Snake cucumbers only sprout at temperatures above 10 °. Underneath, they grow only hesitantly and the harvest is less. That is why snake cucumbers thrive more successfully in the greenhouse. Don't forget: attach a climbing aid and a shade under the roof before installing.

After the ice saints, snake cucumber plants are allowed outside. Whether in the bed or in a planter, the location should be sheltered from the wind and sunny. Place the plants in the prepared bed or planter at a distance of a good half a meter. Depending on the weather, heat and care, they spread quickly along the ground or grow upwards under the roof. Don't forget the climbing aid. Skimming snake cucumbers promotes increased flower and fruit formation.

Snake cucumbers growing on the balcony

You can grow snake cucumbers on the balcony in a bucket or pot of at least 20 liters. Fill the planter with substrate or potting soil, plant cucumbers, attach to a support and place in a sheltered, sunny location.

Snake cucumber harvest time

It only takes a good two weeks after flowering until you can harvest the first snake cucumbers. Don't let them turn yellow, because then they will be overripe and lose their aroma. Better to harvest a little earlier.

Tips & Tricks

Snake cucumbers slide on plant sticks and break off. Especially when ripe fruits weigh down the tendril. Therefore fasten at short intervals of 10 centimeters. Or not just straight up, but also up and down a trellis.
