Plant lemongrass - our tips are guaranteed to succeed

Which location does lemongrass prefer?

In the garden you should give the lemongrass a warm, sunny and rain-protected place. In the room or on the balcony, too, the spice needs a sufficiently bright and well-tempered location.

Which substrate is suitable?

Lemongrass loves humic, well-ventilated soils and, like many heat-loving plants, is very sensitive to waterlogging. The plant feels extremely comfortable in conventional herb or potting soil, which you loosen up with a little sand. Put a drainage layer made of expanded clay (€ 17.50 on Amazon *) or gravel in the planting hole or the flower pot. This way rainwater can run off well and the lemongrass does not get wet feet.

When can lemongrass go outdoors?

Lemongrass is one of the herbs that are most sensitive to the cold and you can therefore only plant the spice outdoors during the warm summer months. Only when there are no more night frosts to fear after the ice saints, you may plant the spice or place the planter on the balcony all day.

Can lemongrass be propagated by yourself?

Lemongrass is usually multiplied by dividing the root. Alternatively, you can let parts of the plant take root in water and grow the aromatic plant yourself. Proceed as follows:

  • Separate the plant parts.
  • Put a few inches deep in a glass of fresh tap water.
  • Place in a sunny place on the windowsill.
  • As soon as sufficient roots have formed, transplant into a flower pot filled with a mixture of soil and sand.
  • Plant several shoots in the container to ensure dense growth.

How is lemongrass sown?

Lemongrass flowers only rarely, so that cultivation with self-collected seeds does not always succeed. Alternatively, you can buy seeds from specialist gardeners and sow them preferably between the end of January and March. Lemongrass is a dark germ, so cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil. At a constant temperature of 20 and 22 degrees, the seeds germinate after about three to four weeks.

How is lemongrass repotted correctly?

Turn lemongrass preferably in spring at the beginning of the growing season. Always give the plant a sufficiently large pot, as the lemongrass forms a very extensive root system.

Which plant spacing must be observed?

The optimal planting distance outdoors is at least fifty centimeters. Due to the clumpy growth and the slightly overhanging leaves, lemongrass that is too dense suffocates sensitive neighbors.

When is harvest time?

You can harvest lemongrass from the windowsill all year round. The leaves develop their most aroma during the summer months, when the main growth begins. When cutting the lemongrass, be careful not to damage the delicate tubers.

Tips & Tricks

Remove yellow discolored parts of the plant regularly, as these unnecessarily drain the plant's strength.
