Store pineapples correctly - this will keep them longer

Unpeeled pineapples do not belong in the refrigerator

The pineapple is a prime example of sun-kissed tropical fruits. As a result, their sunny disposition cannot cope with cool temperatures at any time. This applies consistently from cultivation to storage. Since their absolute minimum temperature is 6 degrees Celsius when they are not peeled, storing them in the refrigerator is not an option. As long as the fruit is in one piece, the following variants are recommended:

  • Can be kept for up to 2 days on a soft surface at room temperature
  • Store in a cool cellar at 10 to 12 degrees Celsius for approx. 1 week hung on the top of leaves

If the temperatures drop below 5-6 degrees Celsius, black spots develop on the skin within a short period of time and the aroma evaporates.

Store peeled pineapples without losing their aroma

At the moment of the first cut, a pineapple begins to lose its aroma. If the fruit is not eaten right away, a wrap made of cling film preserves the taste. The film should lie completely airtight so that no air bubbles are hidden under it. Packaged in this way, you can store pineapples in the fridge's vegetable compartment for 24-48 hours.

This is an exemplary way of peeling a fresh pineapple

In order to store a fresh pineapple in portions, there is no avoiding cutting and peeling. Since the most delicious part of the pulp is located directly under the skin, a careful approach is recommended. How to do it right:

  • Place the pineapple on its side on a cutting board
  • Cut off the top and neck about 1 centimeter thick
  • Stand the fruit upright and peel it from top to bottom with a sharp knife

The dark eyes are then cut out one by one in order to preserve as much of the pulp as possible.

Tips & Tricks

To recognize a ripe pineapple, you need a good sense of proportion and a fine sense of smell. Do not wait until the fruit can be deeply indented because it is already overripe. The bark may yield a little more elastic when pressed. If a pineapple looks plump and not dried out, giving off its unmistakable aroma, it is ripe for harvest.
