Lay out and design a flowerbed with stones

Why create a stone bed?

Stone and gravel beds are by no means mere stone deserts that are broken up by a few plants. Instead, you can use the stones like mulch material so that stubborn weeds don't stand a chance and you have less work with your flowerbed. In addition, beds mulched with stones always look clear and tidy - an important design point in modern gardens as well as in Japanese gardens, in which gravel often even replaces the element of water. The planted perennials naturally have enough space and air to feel comfortable in the bed. How many plants you put in is entirely up to your taste and your ideas.

Different types of stone beds

The selection of stones or stone types determines the appearance of the stone bed. It is practically infinite. Different types and colors of stone, grain sizes as well as gravel, rubble and gravel create very individual design options. You can create the bed very modern - for example with different colored pebbles arranged in geometric shapes and dotted planting of perennials - or as a wild natural garden with a mulch cover made of natural stone gravel, one or the other boulder in between and possibly a natural stone wall.

Which plants feel good in the stone bed?

Not all plants are made for life in a stone bed. Above all, drought-tolerant perennials feel at home here, as the substrate falls dry through the stone ceiling. Mediterranean flower bushes and herbs, but also many mountain plants are just right for this application.

How to create a stone bed

When creating the stone bed, however, it is not enough just to spread gravel or crushed stone between the perennials. Instead, you should lay out the flower bed from scratch, with a weed fleece (€ 28.90 on Amazon *) being laid under the stone layer. Above that follows a layer of topsoil in which the selected plants are placed. Any boulders and other decorative elements should now be placed before the stones are removed as the last step.

Tips

Instead of creating a real stone bed, you can simply integrate one or more beautiful boulders into the flowerbed.
