Raising cuttings from the palm - is that possible?

You cannot cut offshoots from palm trees

In German usage, some indoor plants are called palms, such as the yucca, which are not “real” palms at all. Due to the structure of the palm trees, only the side shoots, which are referred to in technical jargon as Kindel, can be separated and used for breeding.

In order for this to work, it is important that the seedlings have already formed small roots and at least four fronds.

When can cuttings be cut?

The ideal time for cutting seedlings is spring. The young plants then have enough time until winter to develop strong roots and additional leaves.

method

So that the palm is not damaged, you should absolutely observe the following points:

  • Always use very sharp cutting tools.
  • Secateurs or a knife, possibly with teeth, are suitable.
  • Disinfect the tool so that no pathogens can enter through the open interface.

In contrast to many plants, the cuttings must never be placed in water to form roots. They would rot and die instantly.

Insertion

Let the seedlings lie until the cut surface has dried. Only then are they planted in a suitable substrate. An earth that:

  • Gives sufficient stability to the newly forming roots.
  • The small seedlings are supplied with nutrients.
  • On the other hand, it doesn't have too high a nutrient content.
  • Provides good ventilation of the root system.

The composition of the soil depends on the natural location and place of growth of the plants. Palms from desert regions prefer dry and sandy soils, while those that thrive in tropical forests prefer heavy soils. One thing is common to all palm trees: They are very sensitive to waterlogging. Therefore, put a drainage layer made of expanded clay in the pot in which you are inserting the Kindel (€ 17.50 on Amazon *).

Taking care of the small palm

Place the cutting in a bright, warm and not too sunny place. The optimal temperature is between 20 and 23 degrees.

It is very important to water the palm regularly. Not only too much water, but also permanent drought inhibits the formation of roots and can lead to the fact that the offspring die.

Water is always poured when the top centimeters of the soil feel dry. On hot days and with sandy substrates it may be necessary to water the seedling daily. To avoid root rot, it is essential to throw away the excess liquid that collects in the saucer.

Tips

Do not start fertilizing the young plant until after six months. Since the palm is still very small, half the dosage of a commercially available palm fertilizer is sufficient.
