Transplanting yew - tips for transplanting yew

Can a yew tree be transplanted without any problems?

Yew trees are deep-rooted. They form deep, very extensive, fine roots. This is what makes them so resistant to drought, lack of nutrients and weather conditions.

The roots of a yew tree can hardly be removed from the ground without damage. Transplanting is only possible without problems in young yew trees, where the roots are not yet so pronounced.

With older trees, you should consider carefully whether the effort is worthwhile. If necessary, it makes sense to entrust this task to a specialist, as he or she has the know-how and the necessary gardening tools.

The best time of year to transplant a yew tree

In principle, you can transplant a yew tree at any time of the year, except, of course, in winter when the ground is frozen.

However, the best time is autumn, as the soil moisture is then very high. When transplanting in spring or summer, you will have to water the yew more often afterwards.

Dig up roots

If you want to transplant a yew tree, you have to dig up the roots without damaging them too much.

Cut off the earth around the tree. The distance should be one to two meters, depending on the size of the tree. Dig carefully and loosen up the soil every now and then with a digging fork so that you don't prick off the roots and pull them out more easily.

Planting in the new location

Prepare the new location well:

  • Dig the planting hole
  • Possibly enrich the soil with lime and fertilizer
  • Insert yew
  • Pour in soil
  • step down carefully
  • water well

The planting hole should be twice as large as the roots of the yew tree. If the soil is very dry, put the yew tree in a tub of water for 24 hours.

Tips

Yew trees can get very old. You should take this into account when choosing a location. There are specimens that are more than 1,000 years old.
