Not very promising: Propagation via cuttings or seeds
Anyone who was able to propagate a magnolia via cuttings literally landed a six in the lottery, because magnolia cuttings develop roots only with great difficulty. If you still want to try, we recommend the following procedure:
- Cut off a young, approximately 10 centimeter long shoot from the previous year.
- Score the end to be rooted crosswise with a sharp and clean knife.
- Dip it in a good rooting hormone.
- Plant the cutting in a slightly moist growing medium. (€ 9.05 at Amazon *)
- Keep the soil moist, but never wet.
- Make holes in a translucent plastic bag and place it over the nursery pot.
- Put the pot in a light and warm place.

Now it is important to be patient, because the first roots form - if at all - only after a few weeks. However, the probability of success is very low. Incidentally, magnolias do sometimes produce seeds, but the seeds can only reproduce with a lot of luck.
Moss or multiply magnolias using a sinker
The most promising of magnolias is the propagation by means of lowering or mossing, which is actually only one form of lowering. Leave the shoot to be rooted on the mother plant at least until the following year, or even better until the year after next. Then the young magnolia is strong enough to break up. The sinkers are best taken after the leaves have bloomed and the leaves have formed, when the plant has enough strength again to put its energy into the formation of roots. Remember to fertilize the mother plant regularly, for example with ripe compost or a good rhododendron fertilizer.
Tips & Tricks
In the case of evergreen magnolias, cuttings or subsets are not taken in early summer, but in late summer or early autumn, between the end of August and mid-September.
