Growing your own tulips - the path from seed to bulb

Harvest ripe seed fruits in summer

Tulips attract bees and bumblebees with their colorful flower cups. These have valuable pollen in their luggage, which is used to pollinate the flower. At the end of the flowering period, the flowers invest all of their energy so that up to 300 seeds mature in the ovary. Therefore, do not cut off the withered tulip blossoms, but continue the maintenance program undiminished. The dry, brown seed heads are harvested just before they begin to tear open sideways.

How to germinate tulip seeds

Stratification is one of the fundamental requirements for successful tulip cultivation. The seeds will only be motivated to germinate when a cold stimulus signaled them that winter will soon be over. This is easy to do in the garden, where the seeds are exposed to the weather from mid-October. How to do it right:

  • Clay pots fill with a mix of sand and flower or garden soil
  • Then sow the seeds, sieve a thin layer of substrate, water and cover with a layer of grit (€ 12.80 on Amazon *) or gravel
  • Set up in the partially shaded location on the balcony or in the garden

If the seed vessels snow in, this is of particular advantage for overcoming the inhibition of germination. If there is no snow or rain, please water regularly, because the seeds die in drought.

Spring brings us small tulip bulbs

If the seeds have convinced themselves over the course of 2 months through the effects of the cold that the winter is over, the green, long shoots sprout. Until the end of spring there are small tulip bulbs in the substrate at the ends. Please wait until the shoots wilt and fall off. Then dig up the flower bulbs and place them in small pots with potting soil.

It will be another 5 years before your pupils bloom for the first time and the results of your breeding become apparent.

Tips

Diligent tulip growers are often plagued by skin irritations. The toxins contained in the sap trigger tulip dermatitis on skin contact. Therefore, please carry out all work around the cultivation of Tulipa with gloves.
