Grow new forsythia from cuttings

The best time to cut the cuttings

The best time to cut cuttings is in May, when the forsythia has faded. Then the bushes are well in the sap and have a lot of strength to form roots.

Which forsythia branches are particularly suitable?

Choose forsythia branches from the previous year. You can recognize them by the faded flowers that are on them. The wood is still slightly green.

The rods grow upright and are easy to bend.

Sections that are slightly woody at the bottom are well suited.

Prepare cuttings

  • Cut off the cutting
  • Shorten to the required length
  • Remove the lower buds
  • Put in soil or a pot

Shorten the cuttings to a length of 12 to 15 centimeters. If you want to grow a bonsai from the forsythia, the cutting should be a maximum of 10 centimeters long.

Carefully strip off the flower bases from the lower part of the cutting. The roots develop from them underground.

How to properly put cuttings

The prepared cuttings are placed in prepared garden soil or in small pots with potting soil. The cutting should be at least two inches deep in the soil.

In the spring, plant the cuttings in the ground straight away. Then you don't have to transplant them later.

Water the cuttings well. In very dry weather, you will need to water more often. But avoid waterlogging.

Forsythia cuttings take root very quickly

It usually only takes a few weeks for the forsythia cuttings to form roots. You can recognize this by the fact that green leaves and side shoots develop at the flower bases.

Cuttings grown in pots should not be put outdoors until next spring. If you want to keep them in the tub, you can always plant them in the planter.

Tips & Tricks

Forsythia branches even take root in the flower vase. In principle, offshoots can also be obtained from this. However, you need to handle these cuttings very carefully as the roots break easily.
