Saving Ficus benjamini - This is how the plan works

First aid measures - this is how the rescue operation begins

Regardless of whether the weeping fig is dried out, doused, sick or infested with lice - the sequence of rescue measures begins with these measures:

  • Pot the Benjamini with the least possible pulling force
  • Use a knife to remove a sticky, compacted root ball from the edge of the pot
  • Completely remove the substrate from the roots with your fingers or rinse

Now cut out all the sick, dead roots with disinfected, sharp scissors. If more than 30 percent of the root volume is lost, cut the branches back by a third proportionally. Please consider the poisonous, sticky milky sap of your weeping fig. Protect hands, arms, clothing and the work area from contact with the sap. Most of the time, stains on textiles and carpets can no longer be removed.

Repotting brings Benjamini to life - this is how it works

Thoroughly clean and disinfect the previous bucket. Only use the pot if it has a bottom opening as a water drain. Lay a 2 to 3 cm thick layer of expanded clay (€ 17.50 on Amazon *) or potsherds as drainage. An air and water permeable fleece prevents substrate crumbs from clogging the drainage.

Pot your troubled weeping fig in high-quality, peat-free potted plant soil with coconut fibers, bark humus and lava granules. (€ 13.76 at Amazon *) The root disc should be a few centimeters below the edge of the pot so that nothing spills over when watering. Pour the Benjamini thoroughly and place them in a partially shaded, warm window seat.

If the nutrient reserves in the potting soil are used up after 6 weeks, fertilize every 2 weeks in summer and every 6 weeks in winter with a liquid fertilizer for green plants.

Tips

Can you diagnose pests or diseases as the cause of the problems with your Ficus Benjamini? Then quarantine the affected plant in order to carry out the rescue measures there. Thanks to this care you can prevent the infection of neighboring houseplants.
