In Germany, the baobab tree is given with preference on birthdays and anniversaries. Its leaves symbolize vitality and constant growth.

Not least for this reason, it is still finding its way into many living rooms. Following the example of its wild relatives from Africa, the monkey tree forms small white flowers as a houseplant. From this, cucumber-like fruits develop under optimal conditions.

Location

As a result of its origin, the baobab tree is resistant to extreme climatic conditions. Constant changes between dry and rainy seasons are typical for Africa. Over time, this species eventually developed an impressive water storage system.

A sunny, warm spot is just what the plant needs. The windowsill also guarantees constant incidence of light.

Danger:

  • not directly above the heater
  • no unhindered sun exposure
  • in winter at least 10 degrees Celsius
  • rapid growth: calculate enough space

Ideal soil and watering properly

For the flower pot it should be a very specific substrate. Mixtures of sand and clay are ideal. Good water permeability guarantees lush growth. In no case peat soil is an option. We recommend adding a little mulch for sufficient nutrient content. (€ 213.00 at Amazon *)

Make sure that the substrate is always very dry. Accordingly, the water requirements of the African beauty are limited. In contrast, the successful cultivation of small baobab trees requires warm and moist soil.

Rule:

  • young plants: water regularly
  • adult baobab trees: lightly water every 2 days (as required)

Warning: overwatering

If the plant receives too much water, the roots react quickly with rot. As a result, the baobab tree dies quickly.

A trivet can be helpful. Excess water collects in it. You should remove this regularly.

It is always advisable to check the substrate before casting. There is only a need for water when the earth is very dry.

Fertilize

Targeted fertilization can support growth between spring and autumn. Liquid special fertilizer is suitable for this purpose. The baobab tree can tolerate a small dose at intervals of 2 months.

Alternatively, you can use mineral salts. After about 5 to 6 years of care, the baobab tree will delight you with a wonderful change in its appearance.

Its attractive appearance and easy-care properties are also popular with beginners in horticulture. As a container or pot plant, it inspires hobby gardeners of all generations.
