When does the birch bloom? Flowering time and interesting facts

When does the birch bloom

The birch blossoms between March and May. Those who are allergic to birch pollen often notice the first symptoms before this classic season. Since the male flowers, in which the pollen ripens, are formed in the autumn of the previous year and then rest for the winter, even the smallest particles of pollen can be found near the trees. In addition, the increasingly mild winters and early sunny and warm spring days invite the light-hungry birch trees to blossom prematurely.

What happens in the flowering period

The beginning of the flowering time of a birch tree can hardly be overlooked: the distinctive male catkins appear in bright yellow on the older long shoots, while inconspicuous pale green-yellow female catkins can be seen on the short young shoots. The approximately ten centimeters long male flowers release considerable amounts of pollen to the wind. Because birch trees are exclusively geared towards wind and, more rarely, cross-pollination in their reproduction.

For this reason, the blossoming of the birch is characterized by another, often unpleasant phenomenon: yellow pollen settles on windows, balconies or cars. If you want to plant a young tree yourself in your garden, you should therefore carefully consider the location of the birch. Give the tree enough space and, if possible, greater distance:

  • own living area including terrace and balcony
  • Neighboring property
  • other plants
