Keeping roses fresh for a long time: longer enjoyment of beautiful cut flowers

Sugar & Co. - Do the household remedies really keep roses fresher longer?

In many a guide you can read that you should add sugar or lemonade (such as Fanta) to the rose water and "feed" the flowers in this way. The fact is, however, that you would rather leave out such sweet aids - because of the lack of roots, the rose cannot absorb the nutrients anyway. Instead, the sugar is a welcome breeding ground for bacteria and fungi. These settle on the rose and ensure that it quickly drops its heads. Ergo: Better to leave out sugar & Co., even if you've heard this tip from your grandma or even from a florist.

How to properly care for roses in the vase

So that your roses really last a long time, you should pay attention to freshness when buying them. The stems should feel firm and elastic, the flower head not yet fully open. It is best to ask your florist which flowers have just arrived that day. On the way home, the roses should be kept moist and they should not be exposed to frost in winter.

Cut the rose stem

At home, first cut the rose stems diagonally at a 45 ° angle, using a sharp and clean knife for this. Also, remove any leaves that would otherwise be in the water.

Change the water daily

Cut roses need fresh water every day so that no bacteria or fungi can settle in the vase. You should also use lukewarm water, as the flowers do not like standing in cold water and often hang their heads when they are shocked by the cold.

Choosing the right vessel

Roses need space and air - this also applies to cut specimens in the vase. Choose vessels with a wide opening in which the individual stems can be easily arranged.

Cut roses also need a sunny and warm location

Furthermore, place the rose bouquet in a sunny, warm and airy (but not draughty!) Place, for example on a table in front of a window or similar.

Tips

If you want to keep the rose bouquet for a particularly long time, you can also dry it or conserve it in some other way.
