The leaves of the loquat get brown spots

Diseases and parasites

Medlars are plagued by parasites such as aphids. Heavy pest infestation causes discoloration and stains to form on the leaves. Remove the infected leaves and cut completely infected shoots back into the old wood. You can actively fight aphids with a solution of water, rapeseed oil and soap. Spray the entire plant with the agent.

The spores of various mushrooms spread in the air in wind and rain and preferentially settle on the leaves of the medlar. They are the cause of the leaf tan. You don't need to remove the infected leaves. Spray the entire plant with a solution based on copper sulfate. As a preventive measure against fungal infestation, you should water your loquat regularly with a plant tonic. A brew of nettle, wormwood or garlic supports the vitality of the plant.

Cool location in winter

If the container plant is too warm in winter, the leaves get brown spots. The plant needs a cool location with sheltered conditions. A place on the balcony next to the house wall is ideal. Shrubs and hedges that grow in open ground need to be isolated from frost.

The optimal protection for outdoor plants:

  • Press bamboo sticks into the earth around the trunk
  • Wrap wire around the sticks
  • Pour fall leaves into the space in between

Protected location in summer

Warm summer winds cause the plant to lose a lot of water. The dry air absorbs the moisture that the leaves secrete. If it cannot meet its water needs, the leaves tend to turn brown. These symptoms are weather related and show the drought stress the plant is suffering.

Both potted plants and outdoor shrubs like a sheltered location. Move potted plants to a place that offers protection from direct sunlight. When planting shrubs in the garden, make sure that they are in a clear location with indirect sun. If you water the plant regularly, you will prevent drought stress.
