Successfully summering the amaryllis - this is how it works

The outdoor season begins in May

You have done a good job as a hobby gardener when you have rid the knight star of its withered flowers and yellowed main stem at the end of the flowering period. At the usual window seat, you can continue the water and nutrient supply undeterred, so that your amaryllis proudly presents itself with a dense head of leaves in spring. After the Eisheiligen move out, the following summer care program starts:

  • Relocate the knight's star to a sunny, warm location on the balcony or in the garden
  • Before doing this, accustom the hippeastrum to the sun in the partially shaded place for 8 to 10 days
  • Optionally, place the plant and its pot in the ground
  • Water regularly and fertilize liquid every 14 days

If you plant your amaryllis in the bed, it is an advantage if the onion lingers in the pot to protect against voracious voles. In this way, the autumnal storage is easier by hand.

Summer flowering not excluded

While you bring your knight's star healthy and happy over the summer with a loving hand, the South American plant sometimes proves its temperament with a blossom in the middle of summer. Accept the floral gift gratefully and seamlessly continue the recommended care program, supplemented by these cutting measures:

  • Consistently cut off withered flowers from the main stem in summer
  • Only cut the stem when it is no longer bearing flowers
  • Cut out individual, dead leaves from the foliage

Please leave all green leaves on the knight's star until they have moved in during the autumn rest phase.

Tips

You will only bring a knight's star in a jar successfully over the summer if you potted the onion at the end of the flowering period. To do this, put half of the leafed tuber in a mix of cactus and flower substrate. On the sunny balcony you can cover the amaryllis according to these care instructions.
