Division of the plant

The ideal time to divide is in spring, if you wanted to repot the plant anyway.

  • Carefully lift the anthurium out of the planter.
  • Carefully pull the root ball apart into two or three individual pieces of about the same size.
  • If this does not work, you can use a sharp, clean knife to help divide the rhizome.
  • Put in single pots that are not too large with good drainage and continue to care for as usual.

Cuttings

Growing anthuriums from cuttings can be a game of patience, especially since breeding is not possible with just any leaf.

If you look closely at the plant, you will see some leaves with small knots at the bottom. These are roots. Cut out one or more of these sheets with a sharp knife. Put this in a water glass in a bright place where there is a constant temperature of about twenty degrees.

Change the water regularly so it doesn't start to rot. It can still take several weeks for the offspring to take root. The small flamingo flowers are only placed in soil when they have formed stable roots.

Offspring by seed

When the flowers are fertilized, small white berries form on the cob. These must be harvested quickly and sown in good time, as the pulp contains germ-inhibiting substances.

  • Wash off the seeds with water.
  • Fill the growing containers with peat growing medium.
  • Sow seeds three centimeters apart. This has the advantage that there is no need to prick out.
  • The flamingo flower is a light germ. Therefore, do not cover the seeds with soil.
  • Carefully moisten with a sprayer and put on a hood (greenhouse climate).
  • Put in a bright place about twenty degrees Celsius.

The seeds will sprout after ten to fourteen days. After three to four months you can put the small flamingo flowers in pots and continue to care for them on the windowsill.

Tips

The anthurium is an arum plant and, like all plants of this genus, is poisonous. It is therefore essential that you wear gloves when working on the plant.
