As early as March, you can start bringing the cornflowers out on the windowsill.

  • Fill seed trays or pots (€ 14.90 at Amazon *) with potting soil.
  • Spread seeds on top and cover thinly with soil (dark germs).
  • Moisten with a sprayer but do not completely soak.
  • Put a growing vessel with a hood or a transparent plastic bag over it.

The cornflowers germinate quickly and reliably. As soon as the second pair of leaves appears, it is advisable to separate the small seedlings. Each plant now has its own pot. The foil cover is no longer necessary. As before, the substrate is kept moist, but not too soaked.

By the ice saints, the cornflowers had developed into strong plants and, as soon as there was no more threat of night frost, they can be transplanted to their final place in the herbaceous bed.

Direct sowing in the flower bed

You can also sow the cornflower directly in the flower bed from mid-April.

  • Chop the earth thoroughly, remove all root and weed residues and work in some compost.
  • Smooth the substrate with a rake.
  • Make grooves and sprinkle the seeds in them.
  • Cover thinly with soil.
  • Water carefully with a very soft stream so that the seeds are not washed out.

Tips

It doesn't always have to be the expensive growing trays. Old yoghurt pots, in the bottom of which you drill a small hole as a water outlet, are also suitable. Place a few small pebbles over the top so that the drain does not clog and then fill in the potting soil.
