Lawn seeds need a lot of moisture
So that the lawn is adequately supplied with water and germinates evenly, you should thoroughly prepare the soil, supply it with a phosphorus-containing fertilizer and, above all, moisten it thoroughly. The seeds are then spread out and carefully distributed with a garden rake. The moisture should reach about four to five centimeters deep, which you can easily check with the help of a finger test. Until the first cut, the soil should remain evenly moist (but not wet!), So that it has to be watered several times a day during dry phases. If, on the other hand, the soil falls too dry, the seeds die and are then no longer capable of germination - the area would then have to be sown again.

Even if the seeds have germinated successfully and the stalks are already sticking out of the ground, you should still water the lawn every day - unless it rains accordingly. Do not change this rhythm to one or two times a week until the stalks have grown about ten centimeters high and have been mowed for the first time. The reason for this is the formation of roots: At the beginning of the lawn development, the young plants are still dependent on an immediate water supply, as the roots do not yet reach deep enough. However, from the first mowing you must begin to “train” your lawn. To do this, gradually switch to a rarer, but more pervasive, watering interval. In this way the roots are forced to penetrate deeper into the earth and not just to lie just below the surface.
Tips
If possible, lawns should always be laid out in autumn, when the soil is still warm and the autumn rainfall provides the necessary moisture. In the spring, however, it is either too cold or too dry ´, so that you have to make increased efforts for successful lawn cultivation.
