The right bucket for pampas grass

  • At least 40 liters capacity
  • Drain holes in the bottom
  • Use coasters

Large planters can be very expensive. You can get away with it cheaper if you get mason buckets at the hardware store. Just poke a few holes in the bottom and wrap it with foil or put it in a planter.

That is how the earth should be

Nutritious but very loose, often sandy soil from the garden is sufficient as a substrate. Mix in small stones if the soil is too firm. You can of course also plant the pampas grass in special soil for ornamental grasses from the garden market.

The right location for pampas grass in the bucket

A good location for pampas grass in the pot is the south side of the house. If the ornamental grass is to be on the balcony, consider the weight that the pots and plants bring on the scales.

Pampas grass needs a lot of space around itself. In no way should it get in the way. This is especially a problem with balconies.

The reason for the space requirement are the razor-sharp leaves that pampas grass develops. You can get cuts while walking by. If there are children or animals in the house, place the pot so that they do not come into contact with it.

Care of pampas grass in the pot

Place the pampas grass in the pot in the most sunny place possible. South terraces or south balconies are ideal. Pampas grass does not tolerate shade well. It then forms little or no flower fronds.

Make sure that the ornamental grass never dries out completely, but under no circumstances does waterlogging develop. Water regularly and throw away excess water immediately. In order for the perennial to grow well, it needs fertilizer once or twice a month.

Cut back the pampas grass in spring. Be careful not to injure yourself on the sharp leaves and make sure that the young shoots are not damaged.

Hibernate pampas grass properly in the bucket

Pampas grass is hardy, but you should overwinter it frost-free in the pot. Place the bucket in a protected position and protect the plant with foil or fleece.

If the pampas grass is overwintered in the house, move the plants to a bright but cool place.

Tips

Even if pampas grass does not grow as fast in pots as it does outdoors, it is still increasing in size. So that you don't have to constantly buy new planters, divide the plants in the spring when you need to repot them anyway.
