Avocado - healthy for humans, toxic to dogs

Symptoms of poisoning occur within 24 hours

Persin is mainly found in the seed kernel and in the skin of the avocado; there is only a little of it in the pulp. For this reason, dogs should not eat the kernel (which if swallowed can also lead to an intestinal obstruction) or the avocado whole. However, small amounts of the pulp are occasionally fine. Symptoms of poisoning usually occur within 24 hours. Signs of poisoning by avocados are:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Water retention
  • to cough
  • increased heart rate
  • Diarrhea / vomiting
  • cramps

An excess of avocado leads to heart damage, as well as death of the animal.

Tips & Tricks

Chocolate, cocoa, onions, garlic, leeks, tomatoes, peppers as well as grapes and raisins can also have fatal consequences for your four-legged friend. In contrast, vegetable and sweet corn are ideal as dog food, but should only be fed in moderation due to the high sugar content.
