The most important aspects in the care of Callistemon

How crucial is pouring?

The soil around Callistemon's roots shouldn't dry out. At the same time it is important to avoid waterlogging. Water the plant when the top layer of soil has dried. Low-lime to lime-free water is suitable for watering. Excess water that can collect in the pot culture in the saucer is poured off. Basically, the soil should be kept moist.

When, how and with what should be fertilized?

The fewer nutrients are available to the cylinder cleaner, the more sparse its flowers are. It is therefore advisable to give fertilizer.

  • Fertilize spring to autumn
  • keep regular intervals
  • conventional potted plant fertilizers are suitable for potted cultivation
  • Compost, liquid manure, etc. are suitable outdoors
  • fertilize every 2 weeks in summer
  • Stop fertilizing from the end of August
  • Use lime-free fertilizers
  • do not fertilize in winter

Would you rather spend the winter indoors or outdoors?

Callistemon is considered to be sensitive to frost. If you want to enjoy this plant for several years, it is best to overwinter it frost-free. Choose a bright (since it is evergreen), cool room as your wintering quarters. Temperatures between 5 and 10 ° C are ideal.

Callistemon should be watered sparingly during the winter. No fertilizer is required and, on the contrary, it would actually damage the plant. It is also advisable to ventilate the room regularly. From May onwards, the sensitive plants can go outside again. But give some time to get used to the location.

Cutting Callistemon has to be learned

This plant quickly turns out to be well tolerated by pruning. Among other things, Callistemon should be cut after flowering. The flower buds can then develop for the next year. If you don't cut the plant until spring, you also cut away its flower buds. The cylinder cleaner is blooming on last year's wood!

In addition, the plant should be regularly thinned and, if necessary, trimmed. This results in a compact and well-branched growth. Callistemon can also handle heavy pruning.

Tips

Remove dried leaves from the plant to prevent it from rotting and to keep it looking pristine.
