Roses love an airy location

Roses love an airy location

Roses need air and light

Most important for roses is a warm and sunny place that allows at least four to five hours of sun a day. The location should protect the plant from strong winds, but the air must still be able to circulate. Locations with accumulated heat promote pest infestation and diseases, to which roses are unfortunately quite susceptible.

Southeast or southwest locations are best

South-east and south-west locations are particularly suitable for a rose culture. On the other hand, facing south, especially in front of a white wall or similar, can lead to leaf and flower burns due to the excessive heat development. But even those who have a rather shady garden: There are even specialists among the roses for northern locations. For example, the shrub roses 'Madame Hardy', 'Vogelpark Walsrode', 'Frühlingsgold', 'Lichtkönigin Lucia' or 'Rosarium Uetersen' as well as the climbing roses 'Veilchenblau' and 'New Dawn' grow here.

Roses love loamy, humus-rich soils

The ideal soil for roses is deep, loamy-humic, with a proportion of sand and well-drained. You can either improve less suitable soils or plant varieties there that can cope better with the special conditions. But what no rose can tolerate is compacted clay soils. The pH should be in the slightly acidic range between 6 and 6.5.

Tips

If possible, look for a place for your roses where there have not been any roses before. Otherwise you run the risk that your roses will only show stunted growth due to so-called soil fatigue or replica disease. Make sure that there is sufficient planting space.
