Real jasmine is not hardy!

Real jasmine does not tolerate sub-zero temperatures

Even if it is said again and again: real jasmine is not hardy! When gardeners say that their jasmine can withstand temperatures down to minus 20 degrees without any problems, it is false jasmine, which is also called scented jasmine.

Real jasmine freezes to death at temperatures around zero degrees. If you grow real jasmine in the bucket on the terrace, you have to bring it to your winter quarters before the first frost.

The right wintering quarters

It is best to overwinter real jasmine in a cool, preferably dark place in the house. The temperatures should in no case be higher than 10 degrees, rather even below. Therefore, a place in the living room or flower window is not suitable for wintering.

Wintering in the basement is possible without any problems. Real jasmine is summer green and loses all leaves in winter anyway.

Real jasmine is poisonous. So look for a place that children and pets cannot reach.

How to overwinter real jasmine in the house

True jasmine doesn't need much care during the winter, but you shouldn't neglect it:

  • do not let dry out completely
  • do not fertilize
  • check regularly for white spiders and aphids

Pour the real jasmine so that the root ball does not dry out completely. When the top layer of soil is dry, it's time to add some soft water.

Get used to light slowly after wintering

From the end of April you start to slowly wake up the real jasmine from hibernation.

Put it in the light for the hour. After the ice saints, the bucket can be used on the terrace all day.

Cut the real jasmine beforehand and repot it in a larger planter if necessary.

Tips

There is only one variety of real jasmine that is hardy. It is the yellow flowering species Jasmin nudiflorum. It is the only true jasmine variety that you can keep outdoors all year round.
