Boil blueberries for a longer shelf life

Boil blueberries for a longer shelf life

Always process as fresh as possible

You are doing yourself a disservice if you first leave blueberries for days in the refrigerator or at room temperature and then only use them as a stopgap solution when mold growth begins. In order to ensure a maximum taste experience even with cooked blueberries, they should always be processed as soon as possible after picking. If the delicious berries cannot all be consumed fresh from the bush for consumption or processing in cake recipes, they can be processed into the following products:

  • with blueberry brandy
  • to juice
  • with jam or puree
  • with berry compote

Prepare the berries properly

When collecting the berries, attention should be paid to their taste quality and consistency. Ideally, pick the fully ripe fruits early in the morning when they are still nice and juicy from the dew and the coolness of the night. Then select the berries before washing and sort out crushed or defective fruits and remaining stems before boiling or freezing them. When washing the fruits immediately before boiling, the fruits should be dried as much as possible so that the washing water left on them does not falsify the required recipe quantities.

Carefully reduce the blueberries and keep them safe

There are different procedures and recipes for preserving, depending on the individual taste. The blueberries can be boiled with the sugar water for at least 4 minutes and then poured into the glasses. The fruits stay in better shape if the hot sugar water is poured over them and then heated in the oven to around 80 degrees Celsius for around 20 minutes. After the jars have been closed, they should first be thrown onto the lid side so that there is no air layer in the jar and the risk of mold forming. Blueberries that have been cooked in a cool and dark basement can usually be kept for up to a year.

Tips & Tricks

Surplus blueberries can also be quickly mixed with commercial grain during harvest time if there is not enough time. The alcohol absorbs color and flavor from the blueberries after about four to six weeks and is suitable as a basis for refreshing summer drinks.
