Melon for dogs - tolerable or not?

First test small quantities

If your dog has never had melons to eat before, you should test feeding them with a very small amount first. The dog could well develop diarrhea from eating melons. Nevertheless, if tolerated, melons with their high water content can not only be a midsummer thirst quencher for dogs, but also contribute to the health of the animal with the following nutrients:

  • magnesium
  • Vitamin A
  • vitamin C
  • potassium
  • Beta carotene

Always feed the melon piece by piece

In animal parks, melons are also fed to various animal species as a change on the menu and as a thirst quencher. However, when you buy melons, you should make sure that you either feed the dog the melon by hand or that you remove the peel before feeding the melon. Watermelons are often treated with special substances that could be harmful to the dog's health for better shelf life during transport.

Tips & Tricks

Puree some watermelon without seeds and pour the mixture into an ice cube mold. This gives you a refreshing and affordable thirst quencher that you can share with your four-legged friend as a dog-friendly ice cream. But not all dogs like (ice) cold food or some don't tolerate it very well. Therefore, test carefully whether your dog gets the homemade melon ice cream or whether you prefer to give him the melon at room temperature.
