Pour the chives properly

Pour the chives properly

Do you have to water chives in the garden?

Basically, you don't have to worry about planted chives in the garden - they will, provided the location is right, grow lively without great care. You only need to water the plant with a watering can in hot summers when it stays dry for a long time. Yellow, dry-looking stalks are a strong indication that your chives are too dry - remember, the plant loves moisture. By the way, you can safely use tap water - chives love lime.

Pour the chives in the pot properly

In contrast to planted chives, pot chives should be watered regularly. The actual frequency depends on how big the pot is, how much the plant is exposed to the sun and what time of year it is. Basically, the basic rule is that plants need to be watered less, the more soil they have. In addition, much more water is naturally poured in summer than in winter. Make sure that the potting compost is always kept moist, the chives must not dry out. At the same time, however, the plant must not stand too wet, because waterlogging leads to root rot. Good drainage in the pot and loose soil are therefore essential.

Tips & Tricks

Chives go very well with parsley, basil and other thirsty herbs. When planting, make sure that you only combine herbs with similar needs - thyme, rosemary and sage, for example, do not go well with chives in this regard, as they tend to be drought-loving plants.
