1. Line the basket

So that the wicker basket does not get wet and disintegrate so quickly, you should undress it. This works best with a tear-proof film. This covers the entire bottom of the basket and folds the film over to just over the edge. It is not necessary to fix the foil in place, but you can temporarily attach it to the edge with some adhesive tape for easier work.

2. The drainage

If you have a coaster for your wicker basket, you can cut several holes in the bottom of the foil so that excess water can drain off. However, the basket will be damp from below if it is poured too much. Another possibility is to pour sparingly and create a drainage layer as the bottom layer: To do this, put a layer of expanded clay several centimeters thick (€ 17.50 on Amazon *) in your wicker basket.

3. Fill the willow basket with soil and plant it

Now fill your wicker basket two-thirds full with high-quality potting soil. Then place your plants in the desired location and fill in soil to about two centimeters below the edge.

4. Cover open spaces

So that neither bare earth nor the foil can be seen at the edge, put moss in the wicker basket. Alternatively, you can also use pebbles, mulch (€ 99.99 on Amazon *) or other things.

What to plant the wicker basket with?

A wicker basket can be planted seasonally. Spring baskets, for example, are particularly popular and easy to plant yourself. But also in summer and autumn, planted baskets bring color into the house or on the balcony or terrace.

The following are suitable for the spring basket:

  • Crocuses
  • Hyacinths
  • lily of the valley
  • Daffodils
  • Tulips
  • violet

For the summer wicker basket:

  • daisy
  • Garden chrysanthemum
  • petunia
  • sage
  • Everlasting flower
  • Marigold

For the autumn willow basket:

  • Dahlias
  • Autumn anemone
  • Herbstastern
  • Autumn chrysanthemum
  • Heather

Tips

Don't forget the decoration! For the autumn basket decoration, for example, small pumpkins, chestnuts, colorful leaves or Halloween figures come into question, while you can design spring baskets to look like Easter.
