Like other barberry plants, sacred bamboo is also considered to be slightly poisonous. The very decorative, bright red fruits should not be eaten either. They appear in autumn and stay on the shrub well into winter. So the sacred bamboo is not necessarily suitable for a family garden. In addition, the sky bamboo is only partially hardy. If the frost is too severe, its leaves freeze to death.
The essentials in brief:
- not a “real” bamboo
- toxic
- only partially hardy
Tips
The sky bamboo is not so good for a family garden where small children play. The bright red fruits are not suitable for consumption, but they look very tempting.
