Propagate Cyprus grass: cuttings, cuttings, sowing, division

Offshoots - not possible for all species

Not all species can be propagated via offshoots. In general, this is mainly possible with the large species. The offshoots that serve for reproduction grow out of the crown. They are cut off and placed in a glass with water (with as little lime as possible). There they take root within 4 weeks. Then they can move to a pot with soil.

Cuttings - similar to the filing method

Early summer is the ideal time for cuttings to be propagated. This is how it works:

  • any stem with a tuft of leaves is suitable as a cutting
  • Cut cuttings 15 to 20 cm long
  • Halve the leaves with scissors
  • Place the cutting upside down in a glass of water (the leaf should be in the water)
  • Change the water regularly
  • Rooting time: approx. 4 weeks
  • then plant

Division of the plant

The third method of propagation for the Cyprus grass is division. This method is arguably the easiest. If the Cyprus grass is cultivated as a houseplant, the division can be implemented all year round. This method is effective if it is carried out during the annual repotting between February and March.

First, the Cyprus grass is taken out of the pot. You can see the roots - these will now be pulled apart so that you get 2 to 3 sections of the plant. Alternatively, you can use a knife to help. They are planted separately from each other.

Sowing - a little more laborious

The seeds are light germs. Therefore they should hardly or not at all be covered with earth. Lightly press the seeds into the seed compost. Then moisten the substrate.

If necessary, you can put a plastic bag over it. At a temperature between 20 and 25 ° C, the seeds germinate within 3 to 4 weeks. Overall, the sowing is a little more time-consuming compared to the laying method.

Tips

When propagating cuttings, it is best to cut several cuttings and put them in a pot with soil. Then the later growth pattern looks nice and bushy.
